  • Balalaika

When I think about Russian traditional folk music, I always picture to myself the balalaika. It is a well-known instrument that has an instantly recognizable sound.

The balalaika is a traditional Russian instrument with a wooden triangle-shaped body and three (or rarely four or six) strings. The balalaika family includes a number of instruments from the smallest – a 60 to 70 cm long prima balalaika, to a big balalaika-contrabass measuring almost two meters. For centuries it was a popular folk instrument that skomorokhs (wandering actors and minstrels in Russia) used to play to entertain people.

Today balalaikas are produced at musical instrument factories in Russia, although there are still craftsmen who make balalaikas by hand.
