Four years ago in the Latvian National Theater Kirill Serebrennikov staged "Dead Souls".  All roles, including women, were performed by the men in the play.  The decorations were a kind of interior of a giant box made of particleboard.  Latvian artists in training and alcoholic vests threw tires and accompanied the pianoforte in Russian with romances to Gogol's text, composed by Alexander Manotskov.  The finale completely and completely characterized all the significance of what is happening: "Russia, what do you want from me," the artists of the Latvian National Theater sang to the audience, turning to the audience.  It was such a gift from Russia with love, moderately pop, moderately farcical, without mate and outcrops, devoid of cynicism, but not without easy sarcasm.
