Faddey Bellinsgauzen will always be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the exploration of our planet. He was born in 1778. His parents were Baltic Germans, so his real name was Fabian Gottlieb Thaddeus von Bellingshausen. He served in the Imperial Russian Navy, was a cartographer and also an explorer.

Bellinsgauzen participated in the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe (voyage around the world) and later became a leader of another circumnavigation expedition which discovered the continent of Antarctica. This expedition began on July 16, 1819 and lasted 751 days. Besides the continent of Antarctica, the expedition discovered 29 islands in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and one coral reef.

Bellinsgauzen also took part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829.He died in 1852 (at the age of 73). Now his name can be seen on the maps of both our planet and the moon.
