Ostankino Tower is a television and radio tower in Moscow, Russia. It is540.1 metres high. There are 120 floors and 11 lifts there. Ostankino wasdesigned by Nikolai Nikitin. It is currently the tallest freestanding structure inEurope and sixth tallest in the world. Ostankino was built to mark the 50thanniversary of the October Revolution. It is named after the Ostankino district ofMoscow in which it is located.

Construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1967. It surpassed theEmpire State Building and was a masterpiece of Soviet engineering in the timeperiod it was built, to become the tallest free-standing structure in the world. Itheld this record for nine years until the CN Tower was completed in Toronto,Canada in 1976. Now there are a lot of TV stations and FM stations there.
