What is the ozone layer?

The ozone layer is like a blanket that surrounds the Earth. Ozone is the main gas in this layer. Ozone filters harmful sun rays and allows only good ones, which gives us light and heat reaching the Earth.

The problem

In the 80's, scientists discovered a huge hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. They learned that chemicals from aerosols, refrigerators and detergents, very quickly destroy the ozone layer.

Effects

As the ozone hole grows, our planet will be in danger. The temperature will increase and the sun's rays will become very harmful to our skin and eyes. Animals and plants will "die" and some species will even perish.

Solution

Many countries stopped using some of the harmful substances in 1987. However, the ozone layer is still in danger. Researchers are trying to find a way to help the ozone layer to fix itself, but there is still a lot to do.
