Monkeys are the closest relatives of man. People have long thought that monkeys and primates belong to the same animal species, but scientifically speaking it is not. Monkeys are less primate, they have long tails, which they often use as an additional “hand”. They easily use both arms and legs if they want to take something. Monkeys are primates. They live in the tropics, especially in tropical forests. Monkeys and primates are common in tropical Africa and Asia. Monkeys live in South America. Probably the most interesting of all are the huge primates. This group includes chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans. Monkeys are the only primates resembling humans. They are like us, ruthless and have the same diseases as humans. All monkeys sleep at night. Some of them make platforms in trees, others build nests on the ground. Monkeys mostly eat plants and sometimes kill small animals such as insects for food. Chimpanzees and gorillas spend more time on the ground than in trees and move on all fours. Monkeys have one cub, or, from time to time, twins. They travel in family groups of 30 or 40 people. Monkeys live 30 years or more. They carry their children in one hand, like human mothers or lay them on their backs. Chimpanzees are very curious and often friendly and peaceful. Gorillas become aggressive only when they defend their territory. Monkeys are very intelligent animals, second only to humans. They can understand vocabulary of up to several hundred words and characters. Chimpanzees often use the branches, stones and boxes they stand on to get their food. Some scientists even believe that monkeys can count.
