  • I rarely write or write that I work under a pseudonym. My image is not associated with this name. To this day, there are many colleagues and others who only know me or my work by my black and white cartoon avatar. I often don't get into the reasons for using aliases, unless I need to establish my own privacy and security needs in a new workbench, environment, or panel. I am talking about this now because this rudimentary security shield is currently under threat.

In this context, using a pseudonym (i.e. not my official name, but an assigned work name), avoiding any images or videos of me, or direct references to my "real" identity will be considered as anonymity on the Internet: for example, I social accounts networks or online presence that cannot be directly linked to my official identity (which is often required in verification processes). I'm using my alternate personality.

If I fail to use a pseudonym, information about my location, networks, family, and many other sensitive information can be compromised, which can lead to real danger.

The nature of my work, the countries in which I work in the field, my own identity and the safety of my loved ones means that I have no viable options other than working in a way that is often considered "extreme" or unconventional. most. There are many procedures that need to be put in place to ensure proper security. And I'm not the only one. To that end, I and many others have worked to help those who need online (and offline) security have more security options at their disposal.

Authoritarian governments, repressive laws and regulations, or various forms of discrimination are some of the reasons why many have to work under a pseudonym. Many researchers, activists, writers and marginalized individuals (who simply want to exist in online and offline communities) need anonymity methods, pseudonyms or online personas to protect their work and themselves.

Entire communities have developed norms for their own security, evolved to protect their members from the powers that be, including governments, law enforcement agencies or corporations working closely with states. However, the current trajectory of some of the ongoing discussions about technology and ethics may endanger the survival of these groups and their members.
