Halloween has its origins in the holiday known as Samhain, which was celebrated by the Celts over 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France. Samhain marked the transition from summer to winter, and the Celts believed that on this day, the boundary between the living and the dead world became thin, allowing spirits to roam the earth and potentially harm crops. To protect themselves, the Celts lit bonfires and wore costumes made of animal skins, believing that these costumes would trick the spirits into thinking they were animals and leave them alone.
As Europeans, including the Celts, migrated to America, they brought their traditions with them. Over time, Halloween evolved, and the animal-skin costumes turned into the costumes worn today, such as superheroes or cartoon characters. Trick-or-treating became popular in the 20th century, where children go from house to house, saying "Trick or treat!" and receiving candy as a treat.
Today, Halloween is a major holiday in the United States, with people decorating their homes with pumpkins, skeletons, and cobwebs. Some even set up haunted houses for others to explore. It's a time for both scares and fun, as well as an opportunity to enjoy candy and spend time with friends and family.
