    Have you
read the article on the Ipatyev monastery? Then you must remember why the
monastery was called “the cradle of the House of the Romanovs”. Yes, it was
connected with the election of Mikhail Romanov as the tsar of Russia in 1613.
The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia for three centuries .  Many tsars visited Kostroma and the Ipatyev
    monastery.

    The last
tsar Nicholas II and his family came to Kostroma in May 1913 to celebrate the
300th anniversary of their dynasty. The city had prepared for the
high visitors. A new museum building had been constructed and a Red Cross
hospital had been built. An exhibition on the Volga bank displayed the majors
industries and crafts of the Kostroma province.
Nicholas laid the foundation stone of the monument to the dynasty. The
pedestal of the monument was constructed before World War I. You can still see
it on the high bank of the Volga. It was used for the figure of Lenin after the
    1917 October Revolution.

    Many royal
families of Europe were related to one another. The Romanovs had close family
connections witch the British monarchy. Nicholas II was a cousin of George V,
grandson of Queen Victoria (Nicholas’s and Georges mothers were sisters).
Nicholas’s wife Alexandra was Queen Victoria’s granddaughter. Nicholas and
Alexandra had four daughters: Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia and a son
Alexei. All of them were executed on 17 July 1918.
