I wish I were in London now. If I werethere I would organize an excursionand would give you a good idea aboutthis wonderful city.As we know, London is the capital ofGreat Britain and one of the largestindustrial and cultural centers inEurope.I suppose you will share the opinionthat in this historic city modern rulesshoulders with the old, the presentarises from the past, the great and thesmall live side by side in mutualtolerance and respect and in every partof its noisy and complex life there is tobe found a great affection for oldtraditions and history.I don’t know if you have had apossibility to visit this exciting city butI insist that you should do it. And I willgive a piece of advice how to plan yourtour of the city.The best starting point for all theexcursions is well known Trafalgarsquare with Nelson’s Column in thecenter. The square was named tocommemorate the victory of Britishvice-admiral Nelson at the battle ofTrafalgar in 1805 and the Column issurmounted with his statue. I havemanaged to see this monument and ithas made a great impression on me.Then I recommend you to see theHouses of Parliament on the northbank of the river Thames. It also hasanother name – the Palace ofWestminster - as in the past here livedkings and queens.This ensemble is a remarkable exampleof Gothic architecture: the buildingsseem to be directed high into the airand of course are worth seeing. Andhere you will find the famous ClockTower, called “Big Ben”.The next stop is Westminster Abbey. Itis a big church and a national shrine, aplace, where English kings and queensare crowned and famous people areburied. It’s well known for its’ Poets’Corner with memorials to English poetsand writers who were buried here.Everybody has heard about Saint Paul’sCathedral. It is the largest ProtestantChurch in England and a remarkablearchitectural masterpiece. It containsthe unique Whispering Gallery whereyou can hear the whisper of the person,standing at the other end of the gallery.And at the end you should see themajestic and dreary Tower of London,which has an abundant history. It wasone of the first and most impressivecastles built after the Norman invasionof England in the 11th century. It hasbeen used as a royal palace, anobservatory, and arsenal and, finally,as a state prison. And now it’s amuseum where you can see the CrownJewels - the finest precious stones of theEnglish nation and a great collection ofarmour.No doubt that in London there aremany other sights – Tate Gallery, City,Hyde Park and others, and everyonewill find a preference according to histaste.You should only remember that in thiscity you will get fresh impressions, takegreat delight in viewing monumentsand discover the history of England.I think it necessary that every personshould visit London!
