We use for to emphasize the duration of the period.

3. It\'s now 2010. I last saw me cousin in 2007. I haven’t seen my cousin for 3 years. I haven’t seen my cousin since 2007.
4. It’s now five o’clock. I started waiting at two o’clock. I’m still waiting. I have been waiting since 2 o’clock. I have been waiting for 3 hours.
