Washington is known as a capital of the United States of America. The city was named after the first American President - George Washington. The Residence Act was passed on July, 1790 and approved the creation of the capital. George Washington signed the bill into law and selected the location. Washington (formally called the District of Columbia) is a central place of all three branches of federal government - legislative, executive and judicial. More than 170 foreign embassies, different headquarters of global organizations and trade unions are located in the city.
