  • The first ancient Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. in Olympia in honor of God Zeus. The Olympic in Ancient Greece was a religious and sports festival. During the games a sacred truce was always declared and all wars were stopped. At first, Olympics athletes competed only in running. Later, wrestling and chariot races were added to the Olympic games. Winners were awarded with a Laurel wreath and people arranged holidays, sang hymns, made statues in their honor. Greek women were forbidden not only to take part but even to be present at the Olympic games if only they were not priestesses of goddess Demeter. The competitions continued till 394 B.C., when the Emperor Theodosius forbade them. The modern Olympic movement began in 1896 in Athens.
