The painting “Rainbow” came as Ayvazovsky’s response to the critics who labeled his “improvisational” manner as old-fashioned and claimed he was losing his talent. It was painted in 1873 and heralded a new stage in the artist’s creative career. On the one hand, it may seem like yet another shipwreck scene so typical of Ayvazovsky’s style. But on the other hand, it is quite different from all the previous works created by the painter. Ayvazovsky did not renounce his principles but thoroughly revised and modernized them, that is especially obvious in his color choice. Instead of vibrant colors, one can see much more nuanced hues and shades. There are much fewer fantastic elements in the painting than before. Although it was obviously inspired by romanticism, “Rainbow” is still a great step towards visual realism.
