It means that a competition is not just about winning. Contests and games give you a chance to show your talent and skills, but more importantly, they allow you to test yourself, to see what you can or can’t do, what you’re capable of. They give you an opportunity to see what your limits are, and what you should work on. Finally, taking part in a competition is quite a responsible task, so it makes you more disciplined and organized. So, even if you don’t win, there’s still so much you gain in the end: experience and confidence. And that will help you in the future. That is why participation matters much more than victory.
