  • The movie and sound-recording changed popular entertainment in the previous century as they allowed performances to be reproduced over and over again. But there was still another revolution to come. Today we call it broadcasting, and it brings entertainment from public places into the home. The telegraph was the first invention that allowed transmission of information over long distances, the telephone allowed transmission of voices by wire. Then the radio appeared. At first only code signals were sent and received, but soon voice communication became also possible. Between 1920 and 1927 several million radio receivers were sold and radio stations sprang up in many countries, Radio\'s golden age was running from 1927 to about 1950, the same years as the golden age of movies. Radio programmes were paid for by sponsors, who advertised their goods. They hoped that listeners would respond by buying their products.
