He told “ My father is working in the garage now”.

He told that his father was working in the garage then.

We can use direct speech or indirect speech. When we change direct speech into indirect we make some changes. We change the first person singular into the third person singular. My is changed into his. We change the present tense into the past tense. Here we change Present Continuous into Past continuous. (is working is changed into was working). We change now into then.

We use that or we don\'t use that. 

He told his father was working in the garage then.
