Christopher Columbus, who was in the service of the Spanish king, made the expedition in order to find the Western route to India. They did not believe in the existence of land on the other side of the Atlantic. The native people, met by them, with reddish skin were called Indians and the Islands were named the West Indies. Now they are known as the Bahamas and the Antilles. Columbus died with no doubt that he had opened the Western way to India.
