Cowries is a family of marine gastropod mollusks found in warm, mostly tropical seas, some found in the Mediterranean sea. There are about 300 species. Cowries are characterized by an abundance of options for drawing and coloring.

They feed on algae. They hide in the cracks of dead coral fragments , burrow into the sand, and during new and full moons they crawl out and stay on the rocks. Some species of the family were used as money and for incrustation of funeral masks.
