1) We said that the Americans were physically stronger than ours. — We said “The Americans are physically stronger than ours.\"

2) The coach said: \"Your performance was outstanding.\" The sportsman said: \"The rival team made a game that we could at least love them.\" — The coach said that our performance had been outstanding. And the sportsman said that the rival team had made a game that they could at least love them.

3)Bernard said”I prefer the Tour de France.” — Bernard said he preferred the Tour de France.

 4) Minister оf Youth and Sports said \"the number of sports in high school hours will be doubled.\" — Minister of Youth and Sports said that the number of sports in high school hours would be doubled.

5) A friend told me: \"I was able to get three tickets for the ultimate ladies.” — A friend told me he had been able to get three tickets for the ultimate ladies.

  Речь какого-либо человека, передаваемая как его подлинные слова, называется прямой.

Если передается только ее содержание, например, в виде  дополнительных  придаточных предложений, то она называется косвенная речь(Indirect speech).

He told “I am playing now.” 

He told that he was playing than.    

Часто косвенная речь в английском языке вводится союзом that, который, впрочем, может быть и опущен, если сказуемое в главном предложении выражено глаголом в прошедшем времени, то форма глагола в придаточном предложении тоже должна быть изменена на одно из прошедших времен. Местоимения должны быть изменены в зависимости от лица, от которого ведется повествование:

Mary said to me” I can write a letter to you.”

Mary said to me (that) she could write a letter to me.

Все указательные местоимения и наречия времени и места в придаточном предложении должны быть изменены:

• this → that these → those now → then today → that day tomorrow → next day the day after tomorrow → 2 days later yesterday → the day before the day before yesterday → 2 days before ago → before here → there
