Bulgar was founded by the Volga Bulgars in the 10th century. Settlements of the Neolithic, Bronze and Early Iron Age were discovered on the territory of Bolgar, occupying the geographically convenient coastal strip of the Volga. The reason for creating a fortified Bulgarian settlement on the high bank of the Volga at the confluence of it with the Kama is seen in a convenient location, which allowed to control a significant territory. The ancient settlement of Bulgar is a tourist center. The Bulgarian State Historical and Architectural Museum was opened on the territory of the Bulgarian hillfort. It was decided to include the Bulgarian Historical and Archaeological Complex on the World Heritage List at the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee on June 23, 2014.
