Now the share of forests in the total area of ​​Great Britain and Ireland does not exceed 9%. The development of industry, the abundance of large cities, and the development of transport also had a negative impact. Currently, more than 8% of the area of ​​Great Britain is built up, and from Liverpool to London stretches the highly urbanized territory of the English megalopolis, which occupies more than 50 thousand square kilometers. Despite a significant improvement in air quality in cities, the southeast of the island is still characterized by elevated concentrations of a number of hazardous pollutants that are carried by the prevailing westerly winds to other regions of Europe.
