  • Sponges  - a type of aquatic, mainly marine, multicellular animals that lead an attached lifestyle. They are distributed throughout the globe from the coastal zone to almost the maximum depths of the ocean. There are about 8000 species.

    Sponges do not have real tissues and organs, and different functions are performed by various individual cells and cell layers. Most species are fed by filtering water through an aquifer system of varying complexity located inside the sponge\'s body.
