The unknown southern land.Peru is the most mysterious country in South America.When Peru was finally conquered by the Spaniards, they tried to establish a direct connection between Peru and the Philippines through the southern Pacific Ocean. From the surviving companions of Magellan and his followers, the Spaniards learned that here, as in the northern tropical strip of the Pacific Ocean, constant winds (southeast trade wind) and equatorial (South trade wind) draw ships to the west. But Magellan, according to the then cosmographs, went far to the north and therefore did not find the Southern mainland, and his existence seemed to be confirmed by the discovery of Tierra del Fuego and New Guinea by the expeditions of Magellan and Rethos. Between these two \"ledges\" of the imaginary continent, separated from each other by thousands of miles, in the tropical strip of the southern hemisphere there could be, besides New Guinea, other \"peninsulas\".

This mythical southern continent was called in Latin Terra australis incognita (\"The Unknown Southern Land\"). If the northern peninsulas of this continent lie in the tropical zone, then, according to the cosmographs of that era, the same black people should live there, as Retes met in New Guinea. The owners of the Peruvian silver mines dreamed of replacing the \"weak\" Indians, who could not stand the hard labor in the mines, with hardy, muscular Negro slaves. Peruvian planters also dreamed of black slaves. In addition, they hoped to find a lot of gold on the southern mainland. The Spanish sailors, encouraged by the Peruvian authorities, mine owners and planters, sailed through the southern, unexplored spaces of the Pacific Ocean for blacks and gold. They went from the Peruvian ports to the west, to the Philippines. Thousands of islands are scattered along this path: each newly discovered large land could be part of the southern mainland.
