The Republic of Bashkortostan is situated in the southern part of the Ural mountains, on the border of Europe and Asia. The total area of Bashkortostan is about 143.000 square kilometres. The population of Republic is of more than 4 million people. The largest cities are Ufa, Salavat, Neftekamsk, Oktyabrsky. The official languages are Bashkir and Russian. The Republic of Bashkortostan is a multi-ethnic region, where representatives of more than a hundred nationalities live. Bashkortostan is considered to be one of the most economically developed regions of Russia. It is one of the leading industrial and agricultural regions of the Russian Federation as well as one of the main oil-producing regions of the country. It is also the center of chemical industry and engineering. Bashkortostan is one of the most favorable natural areas for tourism and recreation. Due to its diversity of natural landscapes it is sometimes called \"the second Switzerland\".
